Student Stories

Below you can find a couple of stories from our members about their experience as a member of Labyrint and their experience with the study!

Noah, 22 years

Hi! My name is Noah, I’m from Leiden, and I’m now starting my second year of Psychology. After trying out a few other studies, I now know that I’m in the right place with Psychology at Leiden. I’m very interested in people and their behavior, and I really enjoyed my first year where we could learn a bit about all the different directions you can take with Psychology. The research-oriented approach to scientific education, supported by statistics, also appeals to me a lot at Leiden! From the start of the study, the university offered a lot of guidance and information, which allowed me to quickly get acquainted with the faculty and the courses. The assignments are challenging and diverse, and I really feel that I’ve learned a lot during my first year. Additionally, the student association Labyrint helped me feel at home right away. Over the past year, I’ve attended many fun activities, including various dinners and parties. Both here and on a few amazing Labyrint trips, I’ve made many friends, and this year I’m even joining committees! It’s great to meet like-minded people during classes and at Labyrint, studying together and also having fun. I’ve really found my place at the university and can balance it well with living independently in the heart of Leiden, working, and playing basketball at the university sports center. I’m extremely happy with Psychology at Leiden and look forward to the rest of the study and my student life!

Luc, 20 years

I am Luc, 20 years old, and originally from Alkmaar. After completing my vwo, I started studying Future Planet Studies at the University of Amsterdam. This study, which focuses on climate and ecosystems, didn’t quite suit me. I decided to quit and take a completely different path. I enrolled in the psychology program at Leiden University and moved to a student room in Oegstgeest. The diversity of psychology really appealed to me, and I’m now in my second year. I’m particularly drawn to courses that focus on neuropsychology and child and developmental psychology. It’s fascinating to learn about the origins of human behavior and how it develops from childhood. Of course, not every aspect of the program is my favorite. For instance, I find social and organizational psychology less appealing. But not everything about a study has to be fun. To boost my social life, I became an active member of the study association Labyrint. I joined the Introduction Committee, where I helped organize events like Parent’s Day and the first-year weekend. The study association is a fantastic place to meet new, friendly people.

Kirsten, 27 years

Before starting the Bachelor Psychology in 2021, I had already completed a Bachelor of Nursing. Once working as a nurse, I noticed that I missed the depth in mental health and decided to pursue further studies. To this day, I am happy with this decision; the propaedeutic year consisted of a broad exploration within psychology to work increasingly towards the Master’s in Health and Medical Psychology in the second and third year which I have started at the time of writing. Besides the “extracurricular activities” like drinking coffee in Labyrints common room, my second year of study has allowed me to develop on a personal level and learn a lot from all the professors about what my future could look like. Within the institute there is also opportunity to think along with the educational policy and I did this by serving on the board of education for a year. In short, the psychology program has brought me a lot so far. From an enormous amount of knowledge to great friendships with people where I felt at home from the very first moment.
