Stories of Committee Members

Roxy of the deSofa Committee

Hey! I am Roxy, this will be my second year writing for deSofa. I have always loved writing but sadly I don’t really write until I have a reason or objective. This committee felt like the perfect opportunity to give myself a bit of a push to write and at the same time the chance to improve my skills. We have meetings to brainstorm ideas for the overall theme and for the articles and together we build upon these ideas till we find great ones. The meetings are not only practical they’re also fun, it is really nice to catch up with the members or complain about courses or other tragedies of (uni-)life. I write mostly on my own but we also have writing sessions where we just write or brainstorm together. Which is great because sometimes you’ll get a bit lost in your own writing and outside perspectives can really offer a new angle on your article. We also review each other’s pieces and in general keep an eye on how everyone is doing. Sometimes it might be a bit overwhelming, luckily there are always members willing to help or take over some of your workload. Writing for deSofa has been a lot of fun and a great way of creative expression. I’m looking forward to another year at this committee.

Kirsten of the Studytrip Committee, the Social Activity Committee and the deSofa Committee

In the second year of my studies, I started my first committee, namely the Long Journey Committee. This wasn't quite the plan because I was afraid it would take up a lot of time I should be spending on studying. What followed was a great year with a top committee, topped off with our unforgettable trip to Budapest. It was amazing to work towards this trip because there was plenty of room to build a good relationship with the committee and in the meantime organise a trip in which a lot of personal input and creativity was encouraged. It was therefore no surprise that the following year I chose to join two committees (Social Activities Committee and deSofa) and the Advisory Board. OK, that was a bit of a strain in retrospect, but it has allowed me to build so many close friendships, think along with the board, organise a gala together and give my creativity a place by writing texts. At lightning speed, I had a lot of fun and learned skills that I can use for the rest of my life. Next year, I will stick to the deSofa Committee because I enjoy writing for the magazine of our association the most!

Luc of the Introduction Committee

I am Luc, a second-year psychology student at Leiden University. In my first year, after much hesitation and with some encouragement from a former board member, I decided to join a committee at Labyrint. I became a promoter in the Introduction Committee, where, together with my fellow promoter, I was responsible for the promotion and designs of our events.

With the Introduction Committee, I organized the friends and family day and the first-year weekend. It’s amazing to work with a team of nine people to pull off such fantastic events. We have weekly meetings, and although that might sound boring, it's anything but. Our meetings are full of fun, humor, and of course, plenty of cookies. Sure, there are serious moments, but the atmosphere always stays relaxed and enjoyable.

Labyrint also organizes many other great activities, such as fun drinks, lively parties, and the annual gala. These events make student life even more enjoyable and create wonderful memories with your fellow students. I can really recommend joining a committee at Labyrint to everyone. It’s the perfect way to get to know the association in an accessible way, make new friends, and gain valuable experiences.
